Getting Started Making Skins

Here’s some resources for getting started making skins for virtual worlds. You can buy full perm skin psd files on the Second Life marketplace but the price is very high and the skins aren’t necessarily better than what you yourself can do by starting with these free skins and trying out the tutorials. Who wants skins everyone else is using anyway? Make your own! Have fun experimenting and testing them out. Uploads in InWorldz are free so have at it!

Making Skins in Gimp

Start here for the basics from Robin’s Making Stuff blog (not to be confused with our famous Robin Sojourner Wood who is below). She does a good overall of the process of getting a skin from downloading a free skin to applying it to your avatar.
Then Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5 for making skins in Gimp. Male Skin Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4. And Making a Dark Skin. Every skin needs a good shape and Robin has that covered in her Making Your Own Shape blog post.

Free Skins & Skin Tutorials

The Linda Kelly free skins

The Eloh Eliot free skins
and the Getting Started With Starlight Photoshop tutorial. The newest free skins, Starlight and Pleiades, can be downloaded as PSD Photoshop files, or XCF Gimp files. To work with the older free skins you pretty much need Photoshop rather than Gimp.

I’ve seen references to another free skin called Splendor but have been unsuccessful in locating a current copy of it. If you do find a valid link to it, let me know so I can provide it here.
